Review: Bright Side and Gus by Kim Holden

Secrets.
Everyone has one.
Some are bigger than others.
And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you ...
And some will end you.

Kate Sedgwick’s life has been anything but typical. She’s endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there’s a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She’s also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks.

They both feel it.
But they et.ach have a reason to fight it.
They each have a secret.

And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

4 Star Review

This book is a journey that most won't want to take. A journey of a woman who doesn't have much time left to live life. So that is exactly what she is doing... living. Living before she can no longer live.

This book is sweet and sad. I want to say it is all sad (in some ways it is) but really it's a sweet story too. It's a story about this wonderful woman with an infectious love for life. Living life to the fullest really has meaning with Bright Side.

You will cry. You will cry tears of sadness for every character in this story. It is definitely not a light and fluffy story. There are no unicorns and rainbows at the end of this book. It's sad. It's heart breaking. Your heart will hurt. You will weep for the characters in this story.

This is a very deep and profound story. A story everyone should read. Not just because it's a great story, but because I think many could learn a better meaning to life. We all live in our own bubbles. We take life for granted. Nothing in life, including life, should be taken for granted.

The journey that began in top-rated, best-selling Bright Side, continues ...

This is the story of Gus.
Losing himself.
Finding himself.
And healing along the way.

“ … but the honest-to-God truth is I don’t even know how to function anymore. Bright Side wasn’t only my best friend; she was like my other half ... the other half of my brain, the other half of my conscience, the other half of my sense of humor, the other half of my creativity, the other half of my heart. How do you go back to doing what you did before, when half of you is gone forever?”

4 Star Review

Read Gus they said. It will ease the sorrow from Bright Side they said. LIARS! They were all LIARS! I cried and wept just as much in this book as I did in Bright Side. I felt like a big baby reading this book. Let's get something straight. I don't cry. Rarely. It takes a lot for a book to make me cry. So again I say, LIARS. And you know who you are!

Taking Gus's journey in coping with Bright Side's death is not just agonizing. It is heartbreaking. His loss is more than evident in this book. I expected him to go off the deep end. But he went beyond that is this book. I wondered how Kim was going to bring him back from the dark side.

With all of the love and loss in this book, I couldn't seem to put it down. I lived and breathed Gus's story. I prayed for him to find the peace he desperately needed.

If you are looking for a sweet and romantic read, this is not it. I don't care what anyone else tells you. It is sad and at times it's dark. The journey of loss is never pretty, no matter what light is brought in. This is an overly emotional roller coaster. I am really glad I didn't read both books back to back. I don't think I could have handled that.
