“Lane . . . where are you?”
God, all the times she had asked him how he was and he’d said, “Fine.” All those opportunities to talk that he hadn’t taken her up on. All the glances she’d shot him when he hadn’t been looking her way, all the time her monitoring for signs of cracking or strain. The good news was that there was no traffic, so as soon as Lizzie was on the other side, she could take the River Road exit off the highway, shoot north to Easterly’s hill, and see if his car was parked in front of the mansion.

There were rows of white lights down the middle, and everything was shiny, not just from the illumination, but a lack of exposure to the elements. Construction had only finished in March, and the first lines of traffic had made the crossing in early April, cutting rush-hour delays down—

Above their upbringing, the characters are becoming more and more grounded. They will do anything to keep their family's legacy going. But with all of the secrets, it might seem impossible.
Everything from the first book literally hits the fan. Everything is a-muck in this book. I couldn't put it down. With my heart racing and mind reeling, I had no idea where Ward was going to take me in this book!

I had been eyeing this book for quite some time. Everyone had been raving about it. I finally decided to pick it up and read it. I wasn't sure what to expect, especially with it being my first J.R. Ward book. Even though I read the synopsis, I felt like I was going in blind.
This book has a Dallas/soap opera feel to it. I know, I know, this isn't about oil. But basically replace the oil aspect with bourbon. With the family secrets, the lies, the twists, the turns, the super wealthy families, this book was totally a TV show.
I had a hard time keeping the characters straight for a good part of the book. Once I had everyone figured out, I was skipping along through the drama.
This story is full of a lot of information, but it's easy to follow along and reads fairly quickly. The characters are likable and not-so-much likable throughout the book.
Once I hit that ending, I was full-on immersed with the story and couldn't wait to dig into The Angel's Share.
