The Nowhere Man by Gregg Hurwitz

January 28, 2020

He was once called Orphan X.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from a children's home, raised and trained as part of a secret government initiative buried so deep that virtually no one knows it exists. But he broke with the programme, choosing instead to vanish off grid and use his formidable skill set to help those unable to protect themselves.

One day, though, Evan's luck ran out . . .

Ambushed, drugged, and spirited away, Evan wakes up in a locked room with no idea where he is or who has captured him. As he tries to piece together what's happened, testing his gilded prison and its highly trained guards for weaknesses, he receives a desperate call for help.

With time running out, he will need to out-think, out-manoeuvre, and out-fight an opponent the likes of whom he's never encountered to have any chance of escape. He's got to save himself to protect those whose lives depend on him. Or die trying . . .

At this point in the game, I am hooked on this series. When I finally grabbed this book, I ordered the rest of the books. I can't wait to see where they take me.

This one started out a little slow for me. It was obvious it was going to mostly be set in one place. I was dreading it. Especially since a lot didn't really happen for quite some time after the initial big thing. However, I kept going. I wanted to see how Evan would get himself out of this situation.

The book really clicks in some places, not as much in others. The diabolical minds of the characters in this book are something else. Do they seem a little far fetched? Sure. But that's what makes these books both fascinating and eerily creepy too. Once the book really picks up, it picks up.

I can't say I was surprised by how Evan got out. Some might have been, but that little twist played right into the plot of these super spies and highly intelligent characters. I had a feeling that it might come at some point.

I am ready for the next book. I want to see what happens with the new information we have by the end of this book. I want to see how Evan ends up reacting to some fierce realities he didn't know existed. Kudos to the author for this series.
